Dear BGS students and faculty:

We are delighted to inform you that the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) has partnered with BGS to establish two, two-year graduate fellowships in pediatric cancer.  Specifically, the ALSF has contributed $50,000 towards that goal, which is being matched by BGS to bring the total amount to $100,000.
 
All pre-dissertation (i.e. years 1 and 2) BGS students will be eligible candidates after completing at least two lab rotations.  The focus of at least one of these rotations and/or the current post-rotation/pre-dissertation research must be on pediatric cancer.  Note that said research need not be conducted at CHOP (The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia).  Post-Candidacy Exam students are not eligible.

All candidates must be nominated by their rotation mentor or post-rotation/pre-dissertation mentor.  Brief descriptions of rotation and proposed dissertation projects will be used to judge the applications.  Other criteria will include academic standing and activities in the graduate student community at Penn.

Following the selection process at the close of the Spring 2016 Semester, two ALSF Graduate Scholars in Pediatric Cancer Research will be announced.  These Scholars will be supported by the aforementioned funds during their first two Post-Candidacy Years.  The thesis research projects of the ALSF Scholars are expected to be consistent with the ALSF mission to conduct "research into new treatments and cures" for pediatric cancer.
 
The award will be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees and stipend.  In addition, $2000 per year per Scholar will be provided to enable the Scholars to attend the AACR Pediatric Cancer Conference or a comparable meeting.  Also, beginning in the Summer 2016, the ALSF Graduate Scholars will be invited to participate in ALSF-sponsored activities.

Dr. Andrei Thomas-Tikhonenko will Chair the ad hoc Selection Committee.  He will be available to answer any questions regarding eligibility.

Nominators should send the following documents as a collated, single pdf file to by May 15, 2016:
1) A nomination letter describing the candidate's strengths.
2) A 0.5 page summary of the relevant (i.e. pediatric cancer-related) lab rotation(s).
3) A 0.5 page summary of the proposed thesis project.
4) Penn academic transcript (available through the BGS Office).
5) The candidate's CV.
