Total physical response (TPR) is a language

method developed by James Asher.

student inhibitions and lower stress.
Direct method
Advantages
- the students are taught the English as they learn their mother tongue
- This method helps students speak language effectively
- The students will be improved their speaking and listening comprehension skills
- Using of grammar and pronunciation are exactly corrected and taught inductively
TPR method
- It is fun, easy and memorable
- it is a good tool for building vocabulary
- It does not require a great deal of preparation
- Creates positive thinking
- Helps learners achieve fluency faster in learning language
Disadvantages
- In overcrowded classes this method is not effect
- The direct method does not focus on reading and writing skills
- To use this method in subject, teacher should be mastered in subject
- The cost of equipments is very high

Learners’ role in TPR
- Learners in Total Physical Response have the primary roles of listener and performer
- they listen attentively and respond physically to commands given by the teacher. Learners are required to respond both individually and collectively
- Learners have little influence over the content of learning, since content is determined by the teacher, who must know follow the imperative based format for lessons.
Teachers’ role in direct method
- The teacher should teach vocabularies, sentences or grammars through pantomime, real-life objects and other visual materials
- the teacher chooses a grade appropriate passage and reads the text aloud.
- The teacher has to show object or perform the action to clear his concept.
Learners’ role in direct method
- The student needs to learn how to ask questions as well as answer them.
- The learner should think and express into the target language.
- The student needs to take turn reading sections of passage, play, or dialogue out loud
