 Challenge#3: Grid infrastructure 
Getting electricity from where it is generated to where it is consumed 
requires a power transmission and distribution system: the grid. Moreover, to 
include the renewable sources to this grid is not an easy task for many reasons: 
intermittent nature of renewables, the DC output of some systems while most of 
our grids are AC current which require the use of inverters far away generation 
sites, metering problems etc.
So one of the proposed approaches to encourage the use of solar energy at 
homes is what is called solar rooftop leasing: 
Solar rooftop leasing is one of the three basic ways you can make money 
from your rooftop with solar energy. The other two involve owning and operating 
solar panels on your own roof and joint venturing with a developer who will install 
the solar panels and share the income with you. In addition, some companies and 
groups are interested in helping you to take advantage of the opportunity. 
Therefore, you might be offered solar panel free, in exchange for the feed-in tariff 
income and possibly other payments.
Fair deal? Well, maybe - after all, the company or community group that has 
invested in the kit needs to recover its costs. Moreover, maybe you do not want the 
up-front cost or hassle involved in buying your own solar array. 
However, there is more to having a small electricity-generating station on 
the roof of your house than who pays and what they get in return. There are other 
issues to sort out – like insurance, maintenance and performance liabilities and 
tariffs using net metering [5]. 
This concept has been adopted in some countries like the United States 
Germany, Japan etc. Still not very wide spread for many reasons these include 
problems such as rainwater leakage or necessary repairs due to aging of the 
buildings. Therefore, the facility owner and power Generation Company need to 
determine in advance how they will deal with potential problems before signing 
the contract. The second problem is that home users are most probably not able to 
generate revenue by using solar rooftop leasing since they can lease only a small to 
medium system and it will generate almost about what a normal house consumes 
so the benefit will be a reduced bill. In addition to that, the electricity rate varies 
from country to country so the electrical utility might sell the user at night (when

there is no sun and his system is off) at different rate during sun hours when his 
system is working. 
However, I believe this rooftop leasing approach is very good start for 
developing countries for many reasons: 

The government so making legalization mostly owns grids, utility 
companies, and contract handling are easier.

Home users in these countries have low to medium income therefor 
they will probably hesitate to make a big investment in a solar PV system on their 
own. 

Many developing countries have many governmental buildings with 
big space rooftops so this approach might start as a contract between Electricity 
Company and these government entities.
