Frost Resistance 
(

he basic cause of the disintegration of materials a
cted upon by low temperatures is that the waterfil
ling the pores of the material expands when it fre
ezes. Frost resistance depends primarily on the str
ucture of the material:the larger the pores that wat
er can penetrate, the lower frost resistance will be
. 
The concept of frost resistance and methods of te
sting for it were first proposed in 1886 by Profess
or N. A. Beleliubskii. 
The degree of frost resistance is determined on th
e basis of laboratory tests of samples of the mater
ial. The frost resistancevalue is the number of cyc
les of freezing and thawing the material can unde
rgo before losing 25 percent of its initial strength
or 5 percent 
of its weight.
