Politeness in speech
Politeness is best expressed as the practical application of good manners or etiquette. It is a culturally defined phenomenon, and therefore what is considered polite in one culture can sometimes be quite rude or simply eccentric in another cultural context.Similarly, what is the value of polite speech? There are many reasons as to why there is such value in polite speech, some being to establish respect, indicate preeminence, or to demonstrate authority and justification. For example, polite speech is often used to speak with people who work in service to the law such as police officers and judges.
Words that are polite include "Please," "Thank you," and "Excuse me." "Excuse me" is what I say when I would like the attention of another person. I can use my words to say, "Excuse me" when I want to talk to another person. When I use "Excuse me" I wait for the other person to look at me, move, or speak to me.
Positive politeness strategies seek to minimize the threat to the hearer's positive face. These strategies are used to make the hearer feel good about themselves, their interests or possessions, and are most usually used in situations where the audience knows each other fairly well, or an individuals positive face needs, or self-worth, have to be met. In addition to hedging and attempts to avoid conflict, some strategies of positive politeness include statements of friendship, solidarity, compliments. Politeness means consideration for feelings of others. A polite man always puts the feelings of others first. He will not say things that will hurt them; he will never speak in a rude way that will offend them. Politeness has been called the 'oil of the social machine'.
