Activity 4. Invasive species you should know
¹Did you know that you may have harmful foreign insects in your neighborhood? As global trade expands around the world, so do the habitats of many species of insects and plants. When products are transported from one country or continent to another, insects are often secret stowaways. Often, "'there are no natural predators in the new area, so the species can multiply out of control, overwhelming and sometimes devastating the new environment. In other words, it becomes an invasive species. Мапу of today's invasive species are the unfortunate result of global trade, causing millions of dollars of damage to local agriculture, vegetation, and even human health. By studying how species travel from their native habitat to a new habitat, experts can better plan for how to prevent and control invasive species. ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE (ALB)
Native habitat: China, Korea, Taiwan

Invasive in: New York City (1996); Chicago (1998); Austria (2001)
Also found in: Canada, Austria, France, Italy
Characteristics: Damages hardwood trees by making holes and destroying the interior. Can be eradicated.
² Without help from humans, the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) never moves very far or very fast. It can fly a few hundred meters, at most, and usually just stays on one tree. "As an invasive species, the beetles are usually first found in the vicinity of port areas and later in warehouses. Beetles often drop down from trees onto the tops of cars and trucks, and are thus transported and spread to new areas. Although the beetles have moved slowly in the U.S., their effect is devastating. In one city, more than 15,000 infected trees were cut down to control the spread. Destroying all beetles in an area is very expensive and time consuming. Many scientists are trying to determine how to get rid of this invasive beetle and prevent its spread.
