Pre-reading activity Time:

Aim: preparing students for the new topic, raising students’ critical thinking.Give students some questions:

  • What is a plan ahead?

  • What is a prioritise task?

  • What is a multitask?


While-reading Time:

Aim: reading for specific information

Ask students to read the text quickly.


Selecting Sources

There is a lot that can be said about doing research – it can be fun, it can also be frustrating. What makes it more rewarding is understanding what the assignment expectations are and then locating a relevant body of resources that help you write the best possible paper. Start by looking at the requirements of the assignment.

 

•How long is the paper?



•Does the essay require current sources or are earlier sources also appropriate?

•Does the disciplinary perspective of the resource matter?

•Do you need primary resources and/or secondary resources?

•What types of sources are required for the assignment?



Books

The university library owns or provides access to academic books written by scholars, works of fiction such as novels or plays, biographies and a small number of university textbooks.

Works of non-fiction may be single-authored or edited. A single-authored book generally has a sustained, lengthy argument about a topic. The chapters generally build an argument chapter by chapter.

An edited book has many or several authors analyzing a topic from related but slightly different perspectives. Each essay in an edited book can be read on its own
