First Eurobond

  Uzbekistan  issued  its  first  dollar-denominated  bonds  on  February  14,  2019. 

The issuance included two tranches of $500 million each, with one maturing in 

five years (4.75 percent yield) and the other in 10 years (5.38 percent).  The 

bond was heavily oversubscribed, with demand from investors exceeding $8.5 

billion. Most of the Uzbek Eurobonds on the London Stock Exchange were pur-

chased by investors from the United Kingdom. Demand was strong despite in-

ternational  credit  rating  agencies  rated  the  country's  sovereign  credit  BB- 

(non-investment-grade  speculative)  in  January  2019.  Nevertheless,  the  high 

demand  for  the  Eurobond  suggests  that  there  is  a  strong  appetite  among 

emerging-market  investors for  Uzbekistan  which is  engaged in a market re-

forms program. Uzbekistan has no pressing need to raise revenue. In issuing 

the bond, the government is pursuing broader goals.
