Thomas Berwick founded Berwick, the first settlement in St. Mary Parish, in 1797, incorporated October 23, 1907. It is located on the western shore of the Atchafalaya River. The present population is 4418. A mayor and five councilmen govern the town of Berwick. The unincorporated areas are under the jurisdiction of the St. Mary Parish Council.

COMMUNITY FACILITIES
Berwick’s beautifully landscaped RECREATION CIVIC COMPLEX is located on Highway 182 East, across from Berwick Junior High School. The complex consists of a recreation building containing a combination auditorium-gymnasium, meeting rooms, arts and crafts facilities, concession area, restrooms and dressing rooms. These facilities can also be used for weddings, banquets, parties and other special functions. There is also a parking area, picnic area with pavilion, a playground for children of all ages. a baseball field with grandstand including a concession stand and a restroom building.
PHARR PARK, located on Gilmore Drive, offers four tennis courts, playground equipment and a baseball field for the Dixie Youth League.
STEWART PARK, located on Oregon Street, offers playground equipment.
The ST. MARY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, located on the corner of Pattie Drive and Fairview Drive provides the area with a nine-hole golf course and swimming pool for members only.
The PUBLIC LIBRARY is located at 3527 Fourth Street, across from the Berwick Elementary School.

CONNECTION FEES
Prior to receiving municipal gas and water, a deposit is required and refundable when service is terminated. A $100.00 deposit is required for water service and a $150.00 deposit is required for gas service and is due prior to receiving services. A $20.00 transfer fee is required to transfer utility deposits. Deposits are required from renters and mobile home owners. Homeowners are exempt from deposits, but must provide information to the City Hall office prior to receiving services.
Utility bills are mailed on the 4th of each month and become delinquent on the 23rd of each month. Failure to pay before the delinquent date will result in a late fee of 10 percent of the net amount. A night depository is available at the front entrance of City Hall.
If a bill is not paid within 17 days of the delinquent date, service will be disconnected and a $10.00 reconnect fee will be charged.
GARBAGE PICK-UP
Garbage and trash pick-up is provided by Waste Management, Inc.
Garbage cans are emptied on Mondays and Thursdays for residents South of California Street, including California Street (the old part of Berwick).
Garbage cans are emptied on Wednesdays and Saturdays for residents North of California Street, which includes Golden Farms, Country Club, Renwick and residents north of Fairview Drive.
Trash pick-up, such as tree limbs, bagged leaves, furniture, etc., is provided on Fridays by Waste Management. Call for pick-up at 1-800-349-6991. White Goods, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, etc. are picked up by the Town of Berwick during regular business hours. If pick-up is needed, please call the City Hall office at 985-384-8858.
Notify the Berwick Police Department at 985-384-7710 for any water, gas or sewer emergency after hours.
