In modern society information technology is considered to be a powerful strategic resource that opens
up new prospects and has an impact on learning process and the education system as a whole. Nowadays,
as educators around the world are intensively searching for the right balance between the best traditional
methods and new forms of education based on computer technology, blended learning is regarded as the
most optimal form of organizing the educational process in such a way. Blended learning is a combination
of traditional forms of classroom learning
with elements of e-learning, which uses special information
technologies such as computer graphics, audio
and video, interactive elements and so on.
The learning process in blended learning is a sequence of phases of traditional and e-learning, which
alternate in time. [1]
There are the following principles in blending learning:
Consistency. It is important to set consistency in teaching in order to obtain the effect: first, the student
must feel the material himself, then receive theoretical knowledge from the teacher, and
only then apply it
in practice.
Visibility. Thanks to modern e-learning tools, a base of knowledge can be created that students can
always have at hand. Unlike a classical learning model, blended learning gives a student the access to
methodological materials - video lessons, books.
Practical use. Practical training is required to master the theory.
Continuity. Blended learning is partly based on the principles of microlearning. Due to the availability of
the material, a student can always go to the educational portal and get a new material.
Support. In the distance learning system, a student can always ask a teacher a question and get an
answer quickly without waiting for the next face-to-face lesson.
There are several reasons of the transition from the classical form of education to blended. This is
primarily due to the widespread trend at the end of the 20th century towards the optimization of business
processes in higher education institutions.
The most inefficient and at the same time the most disliked types of work were the first to be optimized
in the university educational process:
Face-to-face consultations: students often come with questions that they have not tried to solve on
their own. Methods of tracking a student’s independent work in modern blended learning systems allow
teachers to accept questions only from those who have conscientiously worked
independently;
A check of control works (checking can be automatically performed by testing systems in blended
learning).
Achievements in information technology contributed to the development of blended learning, primarily
due to the ability to share information via the Internet. Questions for exams, samples of project assignments,
study materials can simply be posted on the university intranet or sent to students by e-mail.
Obviously, the effectiveness of blended learning primarily depends on the correct setting of e-learning
goals and the ability to achieve these aims using a specific distance learning system. Clearly set goals
can be based on learning theory. However, the number of such theories is so large that it can significantly
complicate the process.
Blended learning is critically different from much more the broad trend of equipping classrooms with
all sorts of devices and software. People use
the term is either too broad, referring to all educational
technology embedded in a small classroom space, or too narrow, referring to only the types of blended
learning that they enjoyed the most.
The most important part of blended learning is "online learning with some element of student control".
