1.What is a modern or highway
Modern roads and highways are complex engineering structures. They are built for high-speed traffic. Their design and construction should be of high quality and give normal conditions for traffic efficient operation.
Pavements and road subgrades must withstand such natural factors as heating by the sun, free sing in winter or rains. Designers must also take into account such factors to provide roads for maximum stability and strength.
Roads are built in the most different natural conditions – in plains or hills of Europe, through lakes or rocks or Karelia, in the sandy deserts and irrigated cotton plantations of Central Asia, in the mountains of the Caucasus and Pamir, etc.
A road engineer and designer should find the correct engineering and economical solutions, he has to make use of natural science – geology, soil physics and mechanics, hydrology and others. At present the requirements for an engineer engaged in the project and construction of roads and highways are very serious and exacting. He must use the methods of route selection, ensure comfort and safety of transportation. At the same time he must take into account the local geophysical conditions which influence the construction and maintenance of highways.
