2. The Spelling of the Present Participle

A. When a verb ends in a single e , this e is dropped before ing:
hate-hating love-loving
except after age, dye and singe:
ageing dyeing singeing
and verbs ending in ee:
agree-agreeing see-seeing


B. When a verb of one syllable has one vowel and ends in a single consonant,
this consonant is doubled before ing:
hit-hitting run-running stop-stopping
If the verb has more than one syllable (prefer, begin etc.), we double the final
consonant only if the final syllable is stressed:
preFER-preferring beGIN-beginning
but: VISit-visiting reMEMber-remembering
A final l after a single vowel is, however, always doubled:
signal-signalling travel-travelling


C. y doesn’t change before ing:
carry-carrying play-playing


D. If the verb ends in ie, ie changes to y before -ing:
lie-lying die-dying tie-tying

3. Uses of the Present Continuous Tense

A. For an action happening at the time of speaking:
It is raining now.
Where’s Margaret? - She’s having a bath.


B. For an action happening around the time of speaking, but not necessarily
exactly at this time, but today, this term:
I’m learning Latin this term.
Have you heard about Tom? He is building his own house.
You are working hard today.
C. When we talk about changing situations:
The population of the world is rising very fast.
My English is getting better.


D. For a definite arrangement in the near future (when you are talking about
what you have already arranged). Note that the time of the action must
always be mentioned, as otherwise there might be confusion between present
and future meanings:
I’m meeting Peter tonight. He is taking me to the theatre.
I’m going to the ice-hockey match. I bought my ticket yesterday
