INTRODUCTION
"Considering the impressive popularity of the historical novel in the twentieth century, its obvious importance for the formation of national identity and national worldview, as well as for the development of the national social ideal, there are surprisingly few theoretical works devoted to understanding the specific problems of this type of literature, due to its complexity and underdevelopment." The historical novel explores the past, helping to understand the present earlier and foresee the future.
The historical novel reached the peak of its popularity in the USA in the 30s thanks to the world-famous novel by M. Mitchell "Gone with the Wind". The novel "Gone with the Wind" is a fascinating, highly social work, the main problem of which is the fate of human values in the world of buying and selling. The book takes place during one of the most difficult periods in the history of the United States and covers the years of the Civil War (1861-1865) and subsequent reconstruction.
The famous American critic Malcolm Cowley wrote in a review published in 1939 that the novel "Gone with the Wind" is an encyclopedia of plantation life and a "southern legend", first presented as a whole by Margaret Mitchell and presented with all her details and episodes, "with all her characters and with all her stage scenery." Despite the fact that this legend is false and has had a bad impact on the life of the South as a whole, Cawley believes, it retains its appeal; because Margaret Mitchell managed to describe it in such a way that the legend was strengthened, although it mixed a share of realism with romanticism. As a realist writer, true to the truth of life, who felt the direction of the historical process, Mitchell convincingly, in vivid artistic images, recreated the history of the old South during the Civil War and Reconstruction1; as a writer of the "southern school", as a true Southerner, showing the objective victory of new economic forms of life, not to pass a moral verdict on her, not to show her moral doom – the story of the collapse of Scarlett and Rhett's love. The skill of M. Mitchell in "Gone with the Wind" manifested itself in the creation of unforgettable characters, each of whom is endowed with a bright unique personality and at the same time reflects, each in its own way, the historical content of the era. There are no historical characters in this novel at all, they are somewhere behind the scenes. In 1936, the novel was published and became one of the most famous bestsellers of American literature. Even before the end of 1936, more than a million copies were sold. For more than 70 years, the number of fans of this book has been growing all over the world - tens of generations and hundreds of millions of people of different nationalities and faiths.
