Aim of teaching English language
More than one and a half centuries later English has overcome its status as merely the language of the colonial power and has become an integral part of the Indian linguistic mosaic.Became one of the official languages of the nation and thus continues to enjoy the patragon of the Indian elite. Used extensively in education, law, government, media, science and technology. Has undergone signficant changes locally to carry much of the communicative burden of Indian society Indian expression makes Indian English different from either American an British English. They are "innovations" enriching English in terms of creating its global appeal.
India is unduobtedly an emerging economic giant in the 21st century. Therefore it is not surprising that Indian English is asserting itself in the area of global communication. Hence comes the slogan "Survival of the Fittest" in the present fast changing, fast progressing world. Develop excellent competency in English communication to survive soccessfully. And also some words in English came from Hindi: shampoo, pajam and jungle. English was the primary language for barely 2.3 lakh Indians at the time of the census, more tham 86 million listed it as their second language and another 39 million as their third language. This puts the number of English speakers in India at the time to more than 125 million.
English speakers are richer, more educated and more likely to be upper caste. Hindi is both the most widely spoken first language and second language in India. Indian English is a result of the British colonization of India which lasted for more than 200 years. Officially, Indians follow the rules of British English grammar but there are a lot of differences in the way Indians speak English.
In the present context English has acquired the place of the Second language in India for its national and global importance as a language of knowledge, communication, education, business, trade, commerce, science, technology and a window on the modern world. Therefore, English has been or used by Indians for ultilitarian purposes, such as: for social , commercial, official and educational activities within the country and abroad, for listening to the national and global broadcast, for reading newspapers and books and to travel across the country or world.
