2.2. The methodological statement about the use of the exercises
-Why did you choose this exercise?
Phonetics helps us in decoding words and pronouncing it correctly. It reduces mumbling and fumbling and helps in boosting our confidence.
Teaching phonetics is of great importance in the developing of pupils’ listening and speaking habits and skills. There are many types of exercises in teaching pronunciation and I also chose some of them including filling the table, True/False, answer the question, matching and etc.
These exercises help pupils to understand topic clearly and strengthen phonological knowledge. For example, first, fourth and sixth activities are about finding contrastive distributional pairs of allophones. After the understanding theme above, it can help strengthen knowledge. The second activity is matching words with their transcription. With the help of it, pupils learn how to transcribe words correctly. The third activity is True/False and the theory which I explain above will be revised in this activity. In the fifth activity, pupils answer the questions and show how they understood the theme.
- For what level of the learners it can be used?
From these given exercises teacher can use to teach pre-intermediate and intermediate language learners to improve their phonological and pronunciation skills. I wanted my exercises to be colourful and picturable because it attracts youngs too. It would be interesting theme for any grade pupils.
- What is the aim of using this exercise?
Exercises used for developing pronunciation habits may be two groups: recognition exercises and reproduction exercises. Recognition exercises are designed for developing pupil’s ability to discriminate sounds and sound sequences.
Reproduction exercises are designed for developing pupils’ pronunciation habits, their ability to articulate English sounds correctly and to combine sounds into words easily enough to be able to speak English and to read aloud in this language.
I used both exercise types of them and my aim of using this exercises is giving understanding about phonetical analysis and their methods.
