Methods used in this research include analytical and descriptive methods.
The object of this research is to learn George Bernard Shaw’s personal life and his main work, writing style of the author and one of the main play “ Pygmalion”.
The subject of this research is to reveal the main topic of “ Pygmalion”.
Theoretical value of this course paper is to learn how to make research work and one make use this for the further research writing, articles, etc.
Practical value of this course paper is that the materials which were used in this research can be used in practical lessons.
The structure of the work consists of introduction, two main chapters and conclusion.
Introduction is about a literary genre( drama) and a work of drama(play) which are related to the theme of our course paper.
Main part consists of two chapters:
The Chapter I includes two paragraphs.
The former is about the author’s personal life and his contribution to the genre of drama in literature.The latter is dedicated to the writer’s literary heritage and his several popular plays.
The Chapter II is devoted to the play “ Pygmalion” and it also consists of two paragraphs.In the first paragraph , we clarify the main topic and purpose of the play.In the second paragraph , it is written about main characters of the work.
Conclusion summarizes the main points and reviews the information that was covered in the research work.
References presents used literatures, books, internet sites the informational sources, which were used to write this research.
Chapter I: Life and career of Bernard Shaw.
1.1.Personal life of Bernard Shaw and his contribution to the genre of drama.
George Bernard Shaw , known as simply Bernard Shaw was born on July 26,1856 in Dublin, Ireland. He was an Irish playwright, polemicist, political activist and critic. Shaw was born at 3 Upper Synge Street in Portobello in a lower-middle class part of the capital. He was the youngest child in his family. His father was George Carr Shaw and his mother was Lucinda Elizabeth (Bessie) Shaw. His elder siblings were Lucinda (Lucy)Frances and Elinor Agnes. The Shaw family was belonged to the dominant Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. George Carr was alcoholic and among the family’s less successful members. His relatives secured him a sinecure in civil service, from which he was pensioned off in the early 1850s. After that, he worked irregularly as a corn merchant. In 1852, he married Bessie Gurly; in the view of Shaw’s biographer Michael Holroyd she married to escape a tyrannical great-aunt. George’s motives were mercenary , then, he was disappointed because Bessie brought him little of her family’s money.
By the time Shaw’s birth , his mother had become to close to George John Lee. Shaw retained a lifelong obsession that Lee might have been his biological father.
Between 1865 and 1871,B. Shaw attended four schools, however he used to hate all of them. His experiences a schoolboy left him disillusioned with formal education; “ Schools and Schoolmasters”, later, he wrote “ prisons and turkeys in which children are kept to prevent them disturbing and chaperoning their parents. In 1871, he left the school in order to be a junior clerk in Dublin firm. Because of his hardworking, he quickly rose to become a head cashier. During this time , he was known as “ George Shaw” and after 1876 , he styled himself “ Bernard Shaw”. Early in 1876 , he travelled to England to attend Agnes’s funeral. Then , he never lived in Ireland, did not visit there for 24 years. In London , he established himself as a writer and novelist. Moreover , he had become a respected theatre and music critic by the mid-1880s. Besides, he joined the gradualist Fabian Society and became prominent pamphleteer. He was writing a lot of works , but they were unsuccessful. However , in 1894, he achieved his first success, “ Arms and the Man”. He was influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he sought to bring a new realism into English drama. He used his plays as vehicles to disseminate his social, religious and political ideas. By the early 20th century, his reputation as a dramatist was secured with several critical and popular works, including “ Major Barbara” , “ The doctor’s dilemma” and “ Caesar and Cleopatra”.Shaw’s views were often contentious; he promoted eugenic and alphabet reform, and opposed vaccination and organized religion. Because of World War, his works had no lasting effect on his standing or productivity as a dramatist; inter war years saw a series of ambitious plays that achieved popular success. In 1938, he provided a screenplay for a filmed version of “ Pygmalion”. So he received an Academy Award. Since his death , he has been rated as a second only to Shakespeare among British dramatists; he have a extensive influence on generation of English – language playwrights. The word Shavian has entered the language as supporting Shaw’s ideas and his means of expressing them.
George Bernard Shaw is very famous for his role in revolutionizing and developing comedic drama. His most popular and financially successful work is “Pygmalion”. Shaw was just specially fitted for the task of reconstruction of English drama on Ibsenite lines. His function was to be a teacher of his age. His works’ dramatic technical features are: his prefaces , his elaborate atage directions, his rejection of artificial limitation of classical unities, and lack of action and conflicts in his plays. He was hardly depended on the stage for the publicity of his plays.
