Analysis of the story
The Black Cat tells the story of a pet-loving man (the narrator) and his wife. The man got married early and lived a happy life with his wife.
“I got married early, but I was happy to find a disposition in my wife that I didn’t hate. No. There were birds, goldfish, cute dogs, rabbits, little monkeys and cats."
"The Man" lives the same life as Edgar Allan Poe. Poe also got married young. He married his wife, who was 14 years old at the time. The marriage was a happy one and the family is said to have enjoyed singing together in the evenings. Virginia, Poe's wife, now expresses her devotion to her husband in a poem by Valentine, now in her Pratt Her Library collection, and Poe congratulates her on her marriage in her poem "Eulalie". Celebrate the joy of life. This means Poe's life is reflected in the story. Both Poe and "The Man" got married early and had a happy family life. The man loved pets, and his favorite was the black cat Pluto. He fed it all the time. The cat always followed him wherever he went, so they looked like best friends.
"My cat named Pluto was my favorite pet and playmate. I fed him by myself and he followed me everywhere I went in the house. I even managed to stop him from chasing me down the street.”
"Our friendship lasted like this for several years. During that time, my general temperament and character..."
In an analysis some 147 years after his death, doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center believe author Edgar Allan Poe may have died from complications of rabies. Dr. Benitez suspects that Poe contracted rabies from being bitten by his own pet. He was known to have cats and other pets. The death of Edgar Allan Poe remains a mystery. Some say he died of alcoholism, but research suggests he may have died of rabies. The virus originated from his cat or another pet. This may be evidence that Poe likes cats as well as "The Man" in the play.
"The man" was an alcoholic. A habit of drinking alcohol turned him into a brutal killer. Alcoholism changed his personality from good to bad. He killed the cat and killed his wife. ``But my illness bothered me--for any illness is like alcohol! there was."
“I imagined a cat avoiding my presence one night when I came home drunk from my favorite part of town.”
Edgar Allan Poe was known as an alcoholic. Edgar Allan Poe was allegedly an out-of-control drinker all his life. For years, his biographers claimed he died of alcohol poisoning in a Baltimore gutter. A recent biography claims that the exact cause of Poe's death cannot be determined. Either way, what is certain is that Poe suffered the ill effects of alcohol consumption throughout his life. So The Man had the same habits as Edgar Allan Poe - they were both drunk. Poe is reflected in the letters he writes.
