A RESOLUTION honoring the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 for its service and contributions to the Commonwealth and to the community of Louisville, on the occasion of its 157th year of operation. WHEREAS, since 1850, the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 has a history of service to the people of Kentucky and Louisville; and WHEREAS, the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 was the first Prince Hall Affiliated Masonic Lodge warranted in Kentucky; and WHEREAS, the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 is the oldest operating African-American Fraternity operating in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and WHEREAS, the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1's creation predates the establishment of the Grand Masonic Lodge in Kentucky by seventeen years; and WHEREAS, the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 was first established in New Albany Indiana in 1850, for fear that the citizens of Louisville would not accept this organization of "free Negroes"; and WHEREAS, the members of Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 were forced to cross the Ohio River in all weathers, at great risk of life, and then forced to walk five miles further into Indiana to meet; and WHEREAS, the these tribulations did not stop or deter the members of the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1; and WHEREAS, the members of the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 have never forgotten the Three Great Principles of Freemasonry, Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth; and WHEREAS, the members of Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 have made great efforts to relieve the misery and suffering of widows, orphans, the sick and the aged; and WHEREAS, the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1 have been exemplars of Masonry in the Commonwealth and examples to all the citizens of the Commonwealth by their devotion to their Great Principles; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: Section 1. The Senate salutes the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1's 157 years of commitment to the enduring principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth and the Lodge's history of service to the people of Louisville, and extends to the members of the Lodge its heartfelt congratulations. Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor the Mount Moriah Lodge No. 1. Section 3.
