Rex is dead now, 
but he was only a puppy 
when he became a hero in 
1985. He lived in an 
apartment 
building 
in 
Minnesota and one night 
he woke up because he 
smelled smoke. 
Rex, A German 
Shepherd, ran into his 
owner’s bedroom barking 
loudly. Mr. and Mrs. 
Thompson didn’t want to 
wake 
up, 
but 
Rex 
continued barking.
When his owners 
were finally out bed, Rex 
ran to the apartment door 
and scratched it frantically 
until 
Mr. 
Thompson 
opened it. 
Then Rex scratched 
and 
barked 
at 
other 
apartment doors and woke 
up people up. In the last
apartment, no one opened 
the door and finally Rex 
threw himself at the door 
and broke it! The owner of 
the apartment was an old 
man with an artificial leg 
and 
he 
was 
sleeping 
soundly. But Rex woke 
him and waited with him 
while he put his artificial 
leg on. 
The fire destroyed 
the apartment building but 
the thirty-five people who 
lived there escaped, thanks 
to Rex. Rex received a 
special medal for canine 
courage.
