Rick Campbell CDR USN Ret.
A native of Cocoa, Florida, Rick attended the United States Naval Academy, and spent over thirty years in the Navy. His tours of duty include four nuclear powered submarines, the Pentagon, and the Undersea Weapons Program Office. On his last submarine, he was one of the two men whose permission was required to launch its twenty-four nuclear warhead-tipped missiles.
Upon retirement from the Navy, Rick tried his hand at writing and was offered a two-book deal (which has been extended to a four-book deal) by Macmillan / St. Martin's Press for his novel – ‘The Trident Deception’, which has been hailed by Booklist as "The best submarine novel since Tom Clancy's classic – The Hunt for Red October". Rick lives with his wife and three children in the greater Washington, D.C. area, and is working on the fourth book in the series. Published novels include ‘The Trident Deception’ (2014), ‘Empire Rising’ (2015), ‘Ice Station Nautilus’ (2016) and ‘Blackmail’ due out in 2017.
A Little More Information
Rick joined the Navy after high school. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy. He earned a degree in Systems Engineering, and was accepted into the Navy’s submarine program, commissioned as an Ensign. After 15 months of nuclear power and basic submarine officer training, Rick reported to the USS JOHN ADAMS (BLUE Crew), a Ballistic missile submarine. The submarine operated from its base in Holy Loch, Scotland.
Rick, now a Lieutenant, spent a few months aboard one of the new TRIDENT submarines, the USS GEORGIA, in Bangor, Washington, before reporting to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California for two years, where he earned a Masters degree in Operations Research, followed by another 6 months in Groton, Connecticut, for Submarine Officer Advanced Course.
Rick then reported aboard the USS KAMEHAMEHA as the head of its Engineering Department, responsible for the operation and maintenance of its nuclear reactor and propulsion plant. During his three and half years aboard, Rick helped supervise the conversion of the KAMEHAMEHA from a ballistic missile submarine to a Special Warfare platform, able to carry two Dry Deck Shelters and SEAL Delivery Vehicles inside, along with two platoons of SEALs. After the conversion in Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, the USS KAMEHAMEHA was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where Rick spent the last two years of his tour and did two WESTPAC deployments.
After completing his Department Head sea tour, Rick was assigned as the SUBMARINE GROUP TEN Engineer in Kings Bay, Georgia, where he managed a hodge-podge of activities for the Admiral, while also helping new TRIDENT submarine crews prepare for their first Operational Reactor Safeguards Examination by Naval Reactors. The two years at SUBMARINE GROUP TEN passed quickly, and Rick reported aboard the USS MARYLAND (BLUE crew) as its Executive officer, where he was one of the two men, along with the submarine's Commanding Officer, who must agree before the crew would execute nuclear launch orders.
From the quiet town of St. Marys, Georgia, Rick reported to the Pentagon, where he was responsible for modernizing submarine Combat Control Systems and internal communication networks. He spent three years in the Pentagon, then transferred to the Undersea Weapons Program Office at the Washington Navy Yard…………………….
And now, Rick Campbell is a New York Time best selling author. He has four books in the mainstream of Naval military hardcover reading. Their content reflects his active fleet experience.

The Eastern Shore Navy League Council supports and honors the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) at Easton High School and at Pocomoke High School. We sponsor local and travel events throughout the year. The US Naval Academy, Wallops Island, and Washington Navy Yard have been recent year venues. This past year we were especially honored to have been invited to visit the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and the Kings Bay Georgia Naval Submarine Base as guests of the USS MARYLAND (SSBN-738), a ballistic missile submarine.
Members of the local US Coast Guard Station Oxford, and the USS MARYLAND Command and Crew joined us in Easton for a Golf Outing last Summer. We want to continue these events throughout 2016. The Navy League Council also sponsors Seamanship and Merit Awards, Certificates, and Scholarships. New community members and volunteer event coordinators are always welcome.
