PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATIONS OF PROVERBS AND SAYINGS 
USE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

After Uzbekistan has got its independence, every sphere began to develop in our 
country. First of all, our government began reforming economy of the country as 
economy is considered to be the basic foundation stone of the state. Also education has 
been paid much attention to, during the tears of independence it was reformed from the 
beginning to the end thoroughly, as our first President I. A. Karimov told many times 
that our young, generation must be more educated, happier than previous generation.
 
Before starting this discussion, it might be wise to mention here at' least some 
of the English proverbs which in themselves are folk definitions of a sort: "A good 
maxim is never out of season"; "All the good sense of the world runs into proverb"; 
"Proverbs are the children of experience"; "Proverbs are the wisdom of the streets"; 
"Nothing can beat a proverb"; "Proverbs cannot be contradicted"; "Though the old 
proverb be given up. it is none the less true"; "The old saying cannot be excelled"; "The 
wisdom of the proverb cannot be surpassed"; "Common proverb seldom lies"; "The old 
saying, long proved true, shall never be belied"; "Old saws speak truth"; "Every- 
proverb is truth"; "Old proverbs are the children of truth"; "What everyone says is true"; 
etc.

It appears that to the mind of proverb users, i.e. the general population in all 
walks of life, the proverb contains a good dose of common sense, experience, wisdom 
and above all truth. Do such "definitions" still hold true-today, or do modern adults in 
a technological society see proverbs in a much more critical light? Are proverbs still 
considered to be solid kernels of wisdom and truth, or are they laughed off as antiquated 
bits of moral teaching?

The following 55 recent definitions of proverbs might include some surprises 
when one considers that they come from members of a sophisticated and highly 
educated society. The definitions were collected by merely asking various people to 
write their definition of a proverb on a piece of paper without any previous discussion 
of proverbs whatsoever. They represent spontaneous reactions to the simple isolated 
question "How would you define a proverb?" Here are the fascinating answers in 
alphabetical order: 
1. A proverb consists of a short sentence which contains a general piece of 
wisdom. 
2. A proverb contains wisdom which has been handed down from one generation 
to the next. 
3. A proverb describes situations which happened before and which are repeated 
again and again. 
4. A proverb expresses folk wisdom in formulaic, short and metaphorical 
language. 
5. A proverb has been passed down through many generations. It sums up, in 
one short phrase, a general principle or common situation, and when you say it, 
everyone knows exactly what you mean. It is often graphic, symbolic or rhyming, so 
that it is easily remembered. 
6. A proverb is a common expression whose origin is not known or has been 
forgotten. It expresses wisdom concerning life. 
7. A proverb is a common, repeated and generally known phrase which expresses 
a general idea taken to be true. It usually draws upon everyday occurrences or events 
in nature which are easily understood. 
Proverbs and sayings are effective part of vocabulary source as they can be 
useful to describe this or that situation. They are good means of making one’s speech 
more persuasive, strong. Besides, they can provide learners with enough wisdom and 
knowledge as well. It is actual to know how to implement proverbs and sayings into 
practice. Considering these, we can claim that the theme is really actual to learn both 
theoratically and practically in modern methodology.
A proverb is a type of saying that contains a piece of advice or simply contains 
truth or any other universal value. It is a short statement that is popular and people 
make use of a proverb to express their feelings. A proverb can say a lot more than a 
thousand words. Morality, truth, wisdom, friendship, loyalty, etc. are the values that 
are glorified with the use of these proverbs. 
I would like to recommend some issues related to the role of listening in learning 
the foreign language. To my mind, listening is an essential part in teaching and learning 
foreign language process, as a baby learns everything in the world by observing what 
he or she hears. We listen to a number of things in our daily lives, we can better analyze, 
ponder over some problems if we listen to people, speaking can be done only by our 
pack of knowledge gained through listening. Modern English lessons must be 
conducted with the help of listening materials. With the help of mass media or 
technology development process any teacher can get access to various authentic 
materials which can really be effective for students. Listening materials can have wider 
spectrum of themes including sport, politics, travelling, food whatever else. Certainly,

we can take into consideration students’ needs and interests as well. Post-listening 
activities can be integrated with speaking, reading and writing as well. Teachers must 
try to implement all listening techniques and strategies in class as well. Besides, I 
would like to recommend teachers to use proverbs and sayings quite often, as they can 
be a good way of increasing vocabulary source, to use their critical thinking abilities 
in wider scale.
To conclude we would like to state the fact that modern education requires from 
teachers much effort and devotion to their jobs, otherwise it is a complicated job to 
conduct an effective class. Today communication has become the main foreign 
language skill in modern education. Learners must be able to get into communication 
easily in any situation, case. Surely, learners must have a broad world outlook, creative 
and problem solving skills to manage to cope with all language concerning issues and 
problems. Learning a foreign language does not only mean to know grammar rules by 
heart or just know some vocabulary items, it has quite wider functions as well. 
Communication has become the main essential parts of mastering a foreign language. 
in order to make this communication stronger in meaning, we should try to implement 
some other ways of making our speeches better, that can be done with the help of active 
usage of proverbs and sayings. Teachers should try to improve students’ proverb and 
saying knowledge. It can be a strong tool to bring them up in good way as well, it helps 
to differentiate good and bad, it turns into a good way of realizing good things in life. 
Teachers should be as creative as possible in order to find out ways to present proverbs 
and sayings in colourful, interactive way to learners; different simulations, role-
playings, watching English programs due to the levels of learners are effective ways of 
developing foreign language learning; watching cartoons can be a real effective way 
or an item in developing learners’ communicative skills as they can be excellent 
movers or motivators for almost all leveled foreign language learners.
