Knowledge of tourism impacts is important for planning
•
Tourism impacts are identified through a survey
•
A background research is recommended before designing the survey: 
- a combination of research of existing reports, documents, policies, and 
other sources
- meetings with government officials, private sector spokesmen and other 
resource people, often from institutes and universities and field 
inspections
- important ideas can be gained through discussions with local people 
including the private sector and the public (citizens)

Understand the history of the destination and the history of tourism 
development
•
The history of an area also influences present-day social value systems 
and attitudes and gives you ideas about impacts

Pay attention to tourism types, changes, past tourism products, sites, 
development of accommodations and tourism service providers
•
Pay attention to past conflicts among different stakeholder groups and 
changing attitudes towards tourism

Examples of conflict and issues
- Land use conflicts
- Conflicts caused by overtourism (crowding, noise, sharing public space)
- Conflict over use of tourism resources (between local residents or with 
external investors)
- Conflicts between tourism and competing activities (fishing, agriculture, 
forestry, mining, etc.)
- Relationship issues (lack of trust) with public authorities (government, 
tourism planning office, etc.)
- Foreign land ownership
