“grammar and logic free language from being at the mercy of the tone of voice. grammar
protects us against misunderstanding the sound of an uttered name; logic protects us against
what we say have double meaning.”
eugen rosenstock-huessy (sociologist and social philosopher)
Abstract: This research paper shows the connection between logic and language by comparing
two english and uzbek languages’ word order. By investigating the order of words, and their
relevance to each other we can determine that the language also has logic. We can notice this
by the means of that every language follows particular rules and each language has its specific
features, word patterns, grammar contents and lexical units. in fact, this paper is dedicated to
prove that every language is based on logic by comparing two languages including uzbek and
english.
Key words: logic, language, utterance, terminations, collocation, generalization, sentence
structure, affirmative sentence.
how can we see the connection between logic and language? it is the question which makes
most of us think. We try to find the answer by comparing two languages: english and uzbek.
in order to be more understandable, firstly we should know what logic and language is. every
person has their beliefs about the language according to their outlook, thinking and occupation.
as Becker (1983) put it, “our ‘picture’ of language is the single most important factor… in
determining the way we choose to teach one.” noam chomsky, cognitive scientist, explains the
language as the set of rules through which humans can create and understand novel utterances,
ones that they have never before articulated or encountered. [1] Professor M. a. k. halliday
said “language is a political institution: those who are wise in its ways, capable of using it to
shape and serve important personal and social goals, will be the ones who are “empowered”…
: able, that is, not merely to participate effectively in the world, but able also to act upon it, in
the sense that they can strive for significant social change.”
Logic is the study of correct and incorrect reasoning. logicians want to understand what
makes good reasoning good and what makes bad reasoning bad. understanding this helps us
to avoid making mistakes in our own reasoning, and it allows us to evaluate the reasoning of
others. it makes us better thinkers. [2] logic (from the greg logos- thought, word, regularity) is
a philosophical science about the laws and forms of right thinking.[3] aristotle (384-322 Bce)
descibed science of logic as “identifying unknown knowledge from certain knowledge” and
“distinguishing the true idea from wrong one”.[4]
logic is usually defined as the science of right thinking. note that the generalizations
themselves are possible only through the use of language, because only with the help of signs
of the language, that is, words and phrases, we can isolate and fix the general properties. With
the help of the language, the formation of thought takes place, and in the same language the
results of cognition are expressed. naturally therefore, when dealing with thinking, logic pays
particular attention to the study of certain aspects of the language. it is interested in language
precisely as a means of cognition. [5]
The main relationship between language and logic is that they both follow particular order.
as we know, we cannot imagine language without its word order. if we change the order of
sentence, it will also lose its logic. We can see it by analyzing word order in english and uzbek
languages.
characteristic of modern english, as of other modern languages, is the use of word-order as
a means of grammatical expression. if in an english sentence, such as ‘The wolf ate the lamb,’
we transpose the positions of the nouns, we entirely change the meaning of the sentence;
