5. Exploring and identifying teaching techniques for reading
Objective: to explore and identify different techniques in texts from textbooks
Time: 35 minutes
Materials: Handouts 3, 4
Interaction: plenary, pair work
Procedure:
Stage I.
 Tell participants that they discussed strategies their pupils use in reading lessons, but now they will talk about teacher’s techniques. Point out that they are called teaching or teacher’s techniques because teachers use them in reading lessons. Ask participants to take Handout 1. Ask them if they read part A) to find specific information.
Answer Key: No, they read it to find the main idea of the texts.
 Ask participants if they read part B) to find the main idea.
Answer Key: No, they read it to find specific information.
 Say that when we ask our pupils to read a text to find the main idea of it, we use the technique which is called skimming. Write the word ‘skimming’ on the Bb. Explain that the word ‘skimming’ comes from the verb ‘to skim’ which means ‘to take cream from milk’, so by skimming we take ‘cream’ from the text, its main idea. Say that the verb ‘skim’ ends with the letter ‘m’ and the phrase ‘main idea’ (which explains the meaning of the technique) starts with the letter ‘m’. Underline that it could help them remember the meaning of the technique.
 Ask participants which teacher’s technique helps pupils understand the main idea of a text.
Answer Key: Skimming.
 Ask participants when they used skimming, in part A) or part B).
Answer Key: In part A).
Stage II.
 Tell participants that when we ask our pupils to read a text to find specific information, we use the technique which is called scanning. Write the word ‘scanning’ on the Bb. Say that the word ‘scanning’ comes from the verb ‘to scan’ which means ‘to read quickly to find specific information’.
 Ask participants the following questions:
1) Which specific information can you find in a text?
2) Why to use scanning?
3) Which teaching technique helps pupils find details in the text?
4) When did you use scanning, in part A) or in part B)?
