PRACTICAL LESSON 11
TEACHING READING TO B1 LEVEL LEARNERS
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session participants will have:
 learnt professional terms related to reading
 become aware of effective reading strategies
 explored different reading techniques
 learnt how to work with textbooks effectively using proper reading techniques
Key Learning Points
 Reading skill has a number of effective strategies and techniques.
 Appropriate use of the effective strategies and techniques increases learners’ language proficiency.
Preparation: Do necessary preparations for activity 1
1. Lead in
Objective: to involve participants in the topic of the session
Time: 5 minutes
Materials: cards with words of the proverb
Interaction: plenary
Preparation: before the session write words of the proverb ‘Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body’ on 5 cards so that phrases of the proverb are on separate cards. Prepare 4 sets of the cards:
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
Procedure:
 Put participants into 4 groups and put the cards with words of the proverb at random on the floor.
 Ask them to unscramble the proverb in their groups to guess the topic of the session.
 When they do this activity ask if they agree with these words and why.
2. What, why and how we read
Objectives: to analyse what participants read outside the class and in lessons; to make participants aware that the aim of reading influences the way we read
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Handout 1
Interaction: plenary, individual, pair work
Procedure:
 Ask participants what they read in real life and accept their ideas.
 Ask participants what their pupils read in English lessons and accept their ideas.
 Say that we prepare our pupils to use English in real life communication, so it is necessary to read a lot of different materials from different sources.
 Ask participants why people read and accept their ideas.
