Annotation.
Verb comprehension in Uzbek agrammatic aphasia was analyzed with the
verb comprehension test for Uzbek, which is designed on the basis of VAST (Bastiaanse et al.,
2003). The purpose of the test is to assess comprehension of a single verb. Verbs are controlled
for frequency, transitivity, name relation and instrumentality. 10 non-brain-damaged
participants and 6 brain-damaged individuals participated in the experiment. The results showed
verb comprehension is relatively intact in Uzbek agrammatic aphasia. 5 out of 6 brain-damaged
individuals showed near-ceiling results. One participant’s performance was significantly worse
with 57% of correct answers. Name relation and instrumentality had positive effect on verb
comprehension performance of latter participant. This finding is in line with Jonkers and
Bastiaanse (2006) which reported the same for Dutch non-fluent aphasic speakers. Thus the
results of the study show importance of conceptual aspects of verbs in verb processing.
