Box 17 Urban Wind Energy 
Wind and solar power are essentially ‘reversible’ and mobile forms of electricity generation 
because, unlike fossil fuel and nuclear plants, they can be dismantled and relocated. Small 
wind generators can assist in making buildings energy self-sufficient. Combined wind and 
solar installations on urban buildings can capture energy virtually year round. Owners can 
sell energy back to the grid, or rent roof space to energy producers. A diverse range of small 
and aesthetically pleasing, low embodied energy wind generators is coming onto the market.
However, there are still negative myths raising concerns about wind power that have impeded 
its adoption. Some relatively progressive countries are beginning to address the various 
finance, regulatory planning and technical standards that are slowing adoption.

concerns, pertaining to both large and small wind generators, are addressed below.

Can wind turbines be used in urban areas?
There is now a wide range of urban wind turbines on the market. They do not need 
to be shaped like windmills high above the roof. They can be horizontal elements along 
the ridgeline of roofs or vertical elements along the corners of façades. They are de
-
signed to avoid noise and vibrations. They can be integrated with the architecture, add 
architectural interest and be retrofitted on older buildings.
Does wind energy cost more?
Fossil fuels have received far more government subsidies over the last few decades 
than all forms of green energy together.

Currently, it can cost more to construct a 
new wind power plant than continuing to draw energy from an existing fossil fuel plant 
(especially offshore plants). However, many predict that energy demand will continue 
to skyrocket. This makes new wind power plants competitive with 
new
fossil fuel plants 
– especially given the risk of increased fuel prices. If we considered the externality 
costs of fossil fuel-based production sources, of course, wind energy would be far 
cheaper already.
