prepositive definitive groups consisting of whole chains of words. The word order in scientific texts
is mostly direct, rare exceptions are due to the need for logical connection.
The only function of the scientific style is intellectually-communicative, other functions are
optional. The scientific style is characteristic of texts intended to communicate accurate information
from any special field and to consolidate the process of cognition. Military documents in the
English language often include technical instructions and scientific and technical manuals, in which
the intellectual and communicative function also prevails, as opposed to sections of the military
literature, designed in an official business style. It is this circumstance that determines the nature of
the features of the scientific and scientific-technical style in the English language of military
documents.
Thus, we examined the functional styles of the language, at the junction of which there are
military texts, and their characteristic features that are relevant for further research.
1.2 Lexical, morphological and syntactic features of the text of the field charter. Due to the
specific communicative and functional orientation, all military materials are saturated with special
military vocabulary. They widely use military and scientific-technical terminology, variable-stable
and stable phrases that are characteristic only for the military sphere of communication,
nomenclature abbreviations and symbols used only in military materials.
Let us consider their features on the classic example of a military text - the military charter
of the US Army "SH 21-76 Ranger Handbook" ("Ranger Textbook"), released in 2000 (reprinted in
2006) primarily for the needs of the US Army and to one degree or another covering all areas of
military affairs. This document consists of 327 pages, of which we have analyzed 3 chapters (pages
13-76) - Leadership (Management Principles), Operations (Management) and Fire Support (Fire
Support), because we did not consider purely technical sections and illustrative materials (tables and
diagrams) in the appendix.
