General language dictionaries cover all the words of a language and give meanings, definition, and explanation of the words in the same language. The language may be English, French, Hindi, German or Russian.
General dictionaries contain those words of the language which are of general use representing various spheres of life and presenting a complete picture of the general language. They are meant for the general user of the language.
What are general dictionary used for?
In addition to its basic function of defining words, a dictionary may provide information about their pronunciation, grammatical forms and functions, etymologies, syntactic peculiarities, variant spellings, and antonyms.

Bilingual Dictionary.
Monolingual Dictionary.
Etymological Dictionary.
Crossword Dictionary.
Rhyming Dictionary.
Mini-Dictionary.
Pocket Dictionary.
Monolingual dictionaries, which provide all their information in one language, can be divided up further into monolingual dictionaries for native speakers and learner’s dictionaries.
The most important English learner’s dictionaries are the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, the Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary and the Cambridge International Dictionary of English
