In the first chapter of the course work I gave information about the history of detective genre. The thesis will try to sign the origin of the first detective stories. The first detective tale was written in Old Testament. The story of “Susanna and the Elders” tells thestory of a woman falsely accused of adultery. In addition, in this chapter there were different kind of countries' detective works.

The following chapter will be described definition of detective genre and it's subgenres . The analysis of the history of detective genre demands the proper definition of this genre.Tzvetan Todorov in his study “The Typology of Detective Fiction” described three main sub-categories of this genre. And also in this chapter difference between US and British writing style in detective genre.

As I was mentioned , detective literature and detective genre has a great long history. After so many years later this genre developed. And when I talked about detective genre or some kind of detective book firstly we remember the king of detective genre Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the next chapter I described Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's life and his career . Because we can not imagine detective genre without Arthur Conan Doyle. In this chapter I mentioned a woman detective writer Agatha Christie.

The last chapter is about literature analysis of " The sign of four" which is Doyle's famous work. In this work the number of four means 4 people who stole a great amount of treasure. These people are Akhbar , Mr Smoll , Muhammad and Mr Sholto.
