Meeting of September 13, 2011
Weekly News
We had another good attendance, with a full house, for today’s meeting. That included five Key Clubbers from Wenatchee High School. With the ringing of the bell we arose to salute the American flag with Cal Melton leading us. Mark Wiser started us on “God Bless America” and Ernie Hobbs gave the opening prayer.
Tom Irvin introduced the guests who included Linda Herald, a former member and a past president of our club. Incidentally, she is a candidate for the City Council of Wenatchee. Linda was a guest of Tom and it was so good to see her.
The five Key Club members were Sean Richards, last year’s Key Club president, Bryon McRae, this year’s president, Branwen Schaub, Samantha Allen and Olivia Colson. Visiting again was Geeta Shadah, a guest of Doug Head and a houseguest of Doug and Lynn Head for this school year. She is a former Key Club member.
Bryon McRae was the winner of the $5 weekly door prize drawing and our guest speaker, Connie Mehmel, rolled the large dice for the $30 drawing but again the dice did not cooperate so next week there will be $35 in the pot. Al Smith was the “Happy Bucks” collector and did very well.
Announcements
The monthly board meeting is set for tomorrow, Wednesday, the 14th, at the Children’s Home Society office, at noon. Ernie Hobbs will furnish the lunch. All board members are encouraged to attend.
This coming Saturday, September 17th, is the date of our annual Balls Out Road Race. Help is needed for setting up in the morning and taking down in the late afternoon. We need to continue to sell tickets. Just show up on Saturday about 9 am to help up and again in the afternoon for taking down.
The annual Installation Dinner is set for Tuesday evening, October 4th. The time and place are yet to be confirmed. Please mark this important date on your calendar and plan to attend in support of our new president and new officers.
Program
Steve Harvey introduced the second of his programs for the month of September, Connie Mehmel, a forest entomologist with the USDA Forest Sciences Lab here in Wenatchee, located on Western. Connie came west from the State of Virginia in 1978 and continues to make the Northwest her home. She did her graduate work at the University of Washington.
Have you wondered about the dying trees on Blewett Pass? With the aid of a powerpoint presentation, showing charts, pictures and dates, Connie talked about the Western Spruce Budworm that is eating the trees. With twenty slides she told about the life and reproduction of the Budworm.
She further talked about the corrective measures that have taken place and are continuing. There were several questions from the audience, which she dealt with. It was an informative presentation and a learning session. Thanks, Connie and Steve!
Upcoming speakers and programs
-
Next Tuesday, September 20th, we will have a presentation from the Make A Wish Foundation. Although Steve’s wife, Sheri, is very active in this program, she will not be making the presentation.
-
On Tuesday, September 27th, Tom Robbins, the chief of police for the City of Wenatchee, will be talking about the “Gang” situation in Wenatchee.
Closing
CAN YOU HANDLE SOME MORE SENIOR HUMOR?
The Senility Prayer –
Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, The good fortune to run into the ones I do, and The eyesight to tell the difference.
Always remember this: You don’t stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing!
