Another  solution,  for  any  student  who  persistently  misbehaves,  is  to  take  that 

student  from  the  English  class  and  place him/her  with the  head of  English. If  the 

head  of  English  is  teaching  at  that  particular  time,  then  the  misbehaving  student 

will be placed at a convenient position in the classroom. Let us imagine the student 

is  a  misbehaving  Year  9  boy.  Should  the  head  of  English  be  teaching  a  Year  7 

class, the Year 9 boy will go into the Year 7 class and he will be placed next to a 

Year  7 girl. Or  if the  head of  English  is teaching  Year 13, the  boy  will go  to the 

back  of  that  class.  He  will  be  given  work  that  he  can  do  alone  and  without  any 

interruptions. Away from his peer group he will be quiet. After the lesson he will 

be  told  that  this  arrangement  can  carry  on  all  term  if  necessary.  Generally,  the 

misbehaviour ceases at one sitting! 

Some  English  departments  are  able  to  deal  with  discipline  by  sharing  out 

any problems. For example, if that Year 9 boy misbehaves and the head of English 

is  free  but  needs  to  meet  a  parent,  then  the  second  in  department  would  take  the 

boy, or a teacher with experience and a track record for good discipline would step 

in. Students soon realize that there is no messing this department around! The vast 

majority of misbehaviour ends if these procedures are carried out. The problem is 

also contained and dealt with within the department.
