How to do Stream-of-Consciousness
Choose a topic. It’s usually best to focus on the people or organisation behind
whatever it is that irritates you. So don’t choose adverts, choose the people who
make them. It’s not the trains themselves, it’s the people who run the train
company.
Write for 10 minutes on your topic. Start with ‘It irritates me because...’ and
write as much as you can. When you dry up, look at the prompts over the page.
Copy each prompt out and continue to write. The most important thing is to keep
going, to push through.
Turn off your internal censor, be prepared to be repetitive, just keep writing for
the set amount of time.
Have a break and then read it through, see if you can pick up on anything. Can
you take anything further? Can you use the statements that you have made as a
basis for word-play, the way we did in Writing From Newspapers? Could you
joke-web some of the ideas?
