When You’re under pressure
It’s all very well me saying the brain takes its time to come up with things but
what if you’re on a deadline? You have no time to stop and stare!
Fortunately, your brain doesn’t just do background processing while you go for a
walk or watch telly. It can work away in the background on one subject or joke
idea while you’re working on the next. I’ve done it.
I used to call it wheeling. I’d do as much work as I could on one subject and then
when I thought I’d exhausted all ideas, or more precisely couldn’t bear to look at
it any more, I would move on to the next subject. I’d bang away at that one until
I couldn’t bear to look that any more either, and then move to the next.
By the time I wheeled round to the first subject again it would look new and
interesting, and it would be a relief to look through the ideas I’d already had.
Often where I thought I’d run out, my brain would have background processed
new ones for me. It’s fabulous the way it works.
