There are also a series of exercises in self-analysis and self-disclosure that you
can complete yourself with just a pen and paper. These exercises can often open
your eyes and help you to see possibilities that may surprise you.
The first exercise is for you to realize that you have already done many things
and played many roles in life. Starting in childhood, you have learned how to do
and  perform  a  remarkable  variety  of  tasks.  You  have  a  tremendous  number  of
skills and talents that you have developed over time, many of which you simply
take for granted.
Once,  some  years  ago,  I  applied  for  a  job  as  an  extra  in  a  movie.  On  the
application form, one of the questions asked was, “What skills do you have that
might make you more valuable as an extra in different scenes in the movie?”
They gave me a checklist of about 200 different things that a person might be
called on to do in a movie. My job was to tick off all the activities with which I
had  had  previous  experience.  As  I  went  down  the  list,  I  still  remember  being
astonished  at  the  incredible  number  of  things  that  I  had  learned  to  do,  without
even thinking about it.
They ranged from a variety of sports, to driving a variety of vehicles, to riding
horses,  to  holding  babies,  to  washing  dishes,  climbing  ladders,  swinging  on
ropes,  swimming,  diving,  jumping,  tumbling  on  the  ground,  and  on  and  on.
Perhaps one of the reasons that so many people have such low self-confidence is
because they have never sat down to make up a list of how talented and capable
they really are.
