The theme of crime and punishment is closely intertwined in the novel "Dombey and Son." In the fate of the villain Carker, the vectors of revenge of Alice Marwood and Edith Dombey meet. He is the object of Alice's revenge and the subject of a combination of Edith's retaliation against Dombey. Carker's revenge Dombey turns against the "false hero" himself, leading him to an identity crisis and, ultimately, to death.
Carker's death is described by Dickens as the logical conclusion of his unworthy life. He does not accept death at the hands of his victims, fear makes him run and drives him under the wheels of a steam locomotive. Thus, Karker's punishment is hidden for the time being in himself. The weight of crimes and low deeds, being aware, crushed Karker. The death of Karker happens as if by itself, not at the mercy of those thirsty for his death. The image of Karker does not fit into the narrow framework of the villain from the "Christmas tale". The true motives behind Karker's behavior are unclear. The image of Karker can be attributed to the words said about the heroes of Dickens V.D. They are also historically specific - they reflect both national and specific features of the era ”.
In Dombey and Son, Dickens paints the image of Carker the manager, the image of an almost absolute, unprincipled villain. In his image, Dickens brings many fairy-tale elements that make Carker a character in a fairy tale, and not in a realistic novel. Dickens gives Carker no opportunity for repentance and salvation. He suddenly dies, as if erased from the pages of the novel, as befits a character in a fairy tale.
