BASIC DEFINITIONS/MEANINGs

SPORT- Competitive physical activity governed by institutions, rules and regulations, and involves participants with complex physical skills who are motivated to perform by various factors.

FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & SPORTS

• AGE- Different age groups may have different interests.
• INTERESTS- Personal choices and preferences.
• SOCIAL FACTORS–Family/community tradition, culture, finances, time, occupation.
• AVAILABILITY OF FACILITIES- Access to facilities e.g. fields, court, stadium may be easier for some than others.
• THE ENVIRONMENT-Caribbean people won’t take part in ice hockey or snow boarding because of the environment.
• OPPORTUNITIES- Your background may allow experience and exposure to different sports than others.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN SPORTS & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

• Creates an opportunity for competition.
• Allows mixing and socializing with different people.
• Encourages friendships.
• Encourages positive traits such as sportsmanship and co-operation.
• Sports provides an income for some athletes.

Amateur sports vs. professional sports

• AMETEUR SPORTS –The athletes take part for leisure and stress relief in their free time. They play with friends or sometimes join clubs.
• PROFESSIONAL SPORTS –Athletes take part because it is their job, and they receive financial payment and some other benefits.

AMATEUR ATHLETE	PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE
Plays for clubs and amateur teams.	Plays for national and international teams.
No wage or salary but money is sometimes paid indirectly in the form of gifts or travel expenses.	Wages or salary is given.
Scholarships for free access to University are sometimes provided.	Bonus payments in contracts based on player or team performance.
Trust Funds created to deposit money for athletes to use when they retire.	Transfer Fees paid when they are bought by a new team or club.
Sponsorship in which a company provides uniforms, equipment or money to help support the team or athlete.	Media work such as advertisements, magazines, radio or TV show appearances

Challenges of being a professional athlete

• Constant stress and pressure to increase performance.
• Psychological trauma and stress due to constant pressure and expectations of the media and the public.
• Some start cheating to keep winning and to be the best.
• Invasion of privacy due to living in the public eye.
• Media bias and scrutiny.
