CRITICAL THINKING IN THE ENGLISH CLASSES

The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say,
“The children are now working as if I did not exist.”
~ Maria Montessori, Educator (1870-1952)
No one disputes that today innovative teaching technologies and ICT became
an integral part of education system. But apart from innovative teaching technologies
and ICT there are other pedagogical technologies which are successfully being used
in teaching process like: personality-centered education, projects, problem-solving
technique and critical thinking through reading and writing.
Hereby, I want to draw your attention to so called critical thinking.
Firstly, let us take a look at critical thinking. What is critical thinking and why
should
we
teach
our
students
to
think
critically?
Critical thinking consists of mental process of analyzing and evaluating of
information, it is not just blindly believing to what we read or people tell.
Critical thinking is a higher order of thinking: it is the practice of using a number of
different advanced thinking skills in a variety of complex ways. Critical
thinking focuses on thought: it looks at how facts are proven, arguments are formed,
conclusions are reached, not just what the facts, argument or conclusion may be.
Critical thinking is self-reflexive: it involves reflecting on, questioning and testing
your own thinking processes.
Critical thinking is discipline-specific: it engages in particular forms of
reasoning, such as mathematical reasoning, historical analysis or literary
interpretation, which are specific to a particular discipline.
“Critical thinking is self-guided, self-disciplined thinking which attempts to reason at
the highest level of quality in a fair-minded way. People who think critically
consistently attempt to live rationally, reasonably, empathically. They are keenly
aware of the inherently flawed nature of human thinking when left
unchecked.”(Elder, 2007)
As you see above critical thinking is not just thinking, but thinking which entails self-
improvement. Critical thinking has its own benefits in academic performance, in
workplace and everyday life.
