The importance of testing and assessment in consolidation of themes Presentation by Bektarova Gulnora School 19 Zangiota district of Tashkent region - There are advantages and disadvantages of testing system
Disadvantages of tests 1.Some students become so nervous that they cannot perform and don’t give a true account of their knowledge or ability 2. Other students can do well with last-minute cramming despite not having worked throughout the course 3.Once the test has finished ,students can just forget all they had learned 4.Students become focused on passing tests rather than learning to improve their language skills Why should we take tests? 1.A test can give the teacher valuable information about where the students are in their learning and can affect what the teacher will cover next, what to review 2.Tests can give students a sense of accomplishment as well as information about what they know and what they need to review 3.Tests can be extremely motivating and give students a sense of progress 4. Tests can also have positive effect in giving opportunity to students to take feedback when the results are .They can learn from their mistakes How can we make testing more productive? 1.Make the test a less intimidating experience by explaining to the students the purpose for the test and stress the positive effects it will have. 2.Give students plenty of notice and teach some revision classes beforehand 3.Give clear instructions. Avoid making tests out of the given materials during classes. 4.Be sensitive when you hand out the results, Give the students their results on slips of paper. 5. Emphasise that an individual should compare their results with their own previous scores NOT WITH OTHERS IN THE CLASS. Alternatives to testing Teachers give grades for a number of assessments over a period of time. A final grade is decided on a combinations of assessment Continuous assessment Portfolio A student collects a number of assessments and projects and presents them in a file. The file is then used a basis for evalution. Self-assessment The students evaluate themselves . The criteria must be carefully decided upon beforehand Teacher’s assessment The teacher gives an assessment of the learner for work done throughout the course including classroom contributions. What can we do in this weather? examples: fly a kite, play in the ground, play hide and seek Read books at home, watch cartoons, listen to the radio Play snowball, skating, skiing, make a snowman Look at the picture and find the words
