11987. Lilly Belle Richard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Moody, was born near Nemaha county, near Goff, October 8, 1895, and died at St. Anthony’s hospital in Sabetha, Kansas, July 20, at 10 o’clock at the age of 26 years, 9 months and 12 days. When Mrs. Richard was 11 months old, she with her parents moved to the state of Missouri where they lived until she was about four years old. Then they again moved to Kansas, locating near Winchester. Then about 11 years ago they moved to a farm near Circleville. On July 30, 1913, she was united in marriage to Frank Richard of that place. To this union were born three children: Frances Faye, 8; Golden Bernice, 7; and Floyd Hartley, 6. Mrs. Richard leaves to mourn her loss besides her children and husband, seven brothers and two sisters: Fountain Moody of Chicago, John, Charley, Clarence, Elga, Frankie and Albert of Circleville. The two sisters are Josephine of Circleville and Mrs. Eliabeth Drage of Soldier. … she became a member of the M. 11989. Mrs. Laura Reed was born in Clay county, Missouri, on a farm four miles northeast of Liberty, August 6, 1846, and died in Holton, Jackson county, Kansas, August 7, 1922. Age 76 years and 1 day. She came to Holton in 1868 and was united in marriage to Walter Reed in 1870. To this union were born seven children, three boys and four girls. Of this number there were two girls and two boys who preceded her in death. 11990. Maggie B. Brady was born in Ireland, July 4, 1846, and when a small child came to this country with her parents and settled in Mount Pleasant, Jefferson county, Ohio. Her parents died when she was very young. She was raised in the family of Dr. Finlay at Mount Pleasant. April 11, 1867, she was married to James Franklin Naylor and went to Pennsville, Ohio, to live. Their one child, a son, Franklin B. Naylor, died in infancy. In the spring of 1874 Mr. and Mrs. Naylor came to Kansas and located in Holton where she spent the remainder of her life. … She passed away in the afternoon of August 4. Narval McVicker, Sigourney, Iowa, Mrs. Dem Smythe’s grandfather will celebrate his 95th birthday anniversary Friday, September 8. Mr. McVicker’s daughter, the late Mrs. Bevard, was the first one of the five generations to die. Mr. McVicker, his daughter Mrs. Bevard’s great grand daughter were all born in the same month, September, and on the eighth day. The Holton Signal, September 7, 1922.

11992. Talitha Goff was born April 3, 1852, and died at Horton, Kansas, August 5, 1922, aged 70 years 4 months and 2 days. She was married to L. T. Hitchcock April 10, 1870, to which union was born eight children, three of whom survive the mother. These are: Mrs. Clara Allison of Horton, L. R. Hitchcock of Carrollton, Mo., and Mrs. Elsie Garman, of Galveston, Texas. 11994. Henry B. Bair was born Oct. 25, 1838, in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and died Aug. 9, 1922, in Holton, Kan., aged 83 years, 9 months and 14 days. Mr. Bair moved to Jackson county, Kansas, in 1879 and settled on a farm 4-1/2 miles west of Holton. He lived there until 15 years ago when he moved to the city. Mr. Bair was first married in 1859 to Amanda Baker. To this union four children were born, Mrs. E. C. Fowler of Topeka, S. M. Bair of Soldier, Miss Jessie Bair of Topeka, and Geo. Bair, deceased, of Holton. In October, 1870, Mr. Bair was married to Margaret Latta, who lives to mourn his departure. This union was blessed with the following children: T. L. Bair of Mineola, Kan., Edwin, deceased, of Holton, John L. and Harry Bair of Holton, R. D. Bair of Lamar, Colo., Mrs. C. A. Remy of Kansas City, Mo., Miss Sadie Bair and Mrs. Grace Johnson of Holton, and Mary L. Bair who died in the service of her country as a nurse at Fort Riley, Kan., in 1918. Her name has been immortalized by the American Legion, Mary L. Bair Post being named in remembrance of her faithful service. Besides these, his other immediate relatives are three sisters: Mrs. S. C. Latta of Holton, Mrs. Mary Cochran of Latrobe, Pa., Mrs. Nettie Armel of Lycippus, Pa. His sisters are all living. Three brothers have preceded him in death. Margaret M. Latta was born on April 12, 1844, in Pleasant Unity, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and died at her home in Holton Friday morning, November 3, 1922, at the age of 78 years, 6 months, and 22 days. She received her education in the public schools of Westmoreland, after which she taught school in her home county for three years. She was married to Henry B. Bair on October 4, 1870. To this union nine children were born, T. L. Bair of Minneola, Kan.; Edwin Bair who died on March 19, 1892; John L. Bair and Harry Bair of Lamar, Colo.; Mrs. C. A. Remy of Kansas City, Mo.; Sadie L. Bair and Mrs. Grace Johnston both of Holton, and Mary L. Bair who died at Ft. Riley October 25, 1918. In 1879, she with her husband left Pennsylvania and came to Kansas and settled on a farm near Holton which was their home until they moved to town a few years ago. When she was only a young girl … united with the Presbyterian church in her home town in Pennsylvania, later transferring her membership to the Holton Presbyterian church. … Besides raising her own children, she was also a true mother to four step-children, all of whom are living except one; they are Mrs. E. Olive Knox, the daughter of Rev. Luther and Mary E. Knox, was born in Buchanan county, Missouri, Dec. 3, 1845. She was the eldest of ten children, four of whom have preceded her. Three brothers and two sisters remain. Charles Knox of Sherman, Texas, Luther Knox of Coyville, Kansas, Joseph Knox of Oregon, Mrs. Mary E. Snyder of Holton and Mrs. Cora Pool of Holton. She was married Jan. 6, 1870, to John C. Snyder who departed this life May 30, 1910. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Ellis of Valley Falls, and Mrs. Gertie Hill of Holton. She leaves six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She united with the M. E. church at an early age, and afterwards became a member of the U. Stirton was born near Guelph, Canada, on December 23, 1859 and died at his home near Guthrie, Okla., on August 13, 1922, of apoplexy. … Interment was made in Mound Valley cemetery near his home. He was the son of William and Isabelle Stirton, and was reared in the Brush Creek neighborhood. He was married to Miss Anna Pope, of Circleville, Kansas and to this union four sons and four daughters were born. His wife and three children preceded him in death. 12011. Maxine Elliott, the eldest daughter of David L. and Amanda Brown, was born in Casey county, Kentucky, on September 22, 1881. She came with the family to Kansas in 1885 and settled in Comanche county, where they lived for five years, moving to Neosho county and residing one year, thence to Jackson county and lived in the Banner neighborhood for three years, then moved north to Circleville and remained two years, then to Nemaha county and settled on their present homestead. In her fifteenth year she united with the M. E. church at Ontario. She began life for herself at fourteen years of age, and labored in the neighboring homes to assist her parents in caring for younger members of the family. She soon became so efficient as a domestic that she was induced to go to Kansas City, where she labored as domestic and seamstress and clerk. She then spent two years in Mexico caring for an invalid aunt, going from there to California where she remained several years and became a head clerk at Hotel El Miraol at Santa Barbara. The indoor work preyed upon her health, and loneliness and toil induced her to readily accept the Christian Science teachings to which she became an ardent follower. In 1919 she went to Glendale, Ariz., and invested her life’s earnings in a tract of land near the home of her sister, Mrs. A. V. Wilson where she died on September 2, 1922, at the age of forty years eleven months and twenty days. Her body was brought to the old home near Ontario and buried in the Ontario cemetery. She leaves to mourn her loss her parents, four brothers and four sisters: Bradley, of Waukeeney, Kan.; Ambrose, of Bancroft, Kan.; Mrs. Dona Wilson of Glendale, Ariz.; Mrs. Allie Allard of Soldier, Kan.; Grant and Glen of Rawlins, Wyo.; Verda and Clare, of Ontario, Kan. 12012. Thomas Jefferson May was born in Livingstone county, New York, August 26, 1833. He passed from this life at his home on Pennsylvania Ave., of this city, at 2:45 p. m., August 30, 1922, aged 89 years and four days. He was married to Livie E. Straight, of Sandusky, Ohio, June 20, 1865. To this union were born five children. They are Charles James, who passed away 18 years ago; Jennie A. Vine, of Holton, Kan.; Wilmot E., of Topeka, Kan.; Fred S., of Hoyt, Kan., and Ross Edelbert of Sterling, Colo. Mr. and Mrs. May came to Kansas in the year of 1886 and engaged in farming. Eighteen years ago they came to Holton and retired from strenuous labors. Mr. May has been a member of the United Brethren church for thirty years. … he was a soldier in the Union Army the last nine months of the Civil War. … He was laid away to rest in the Holton cemetery. 12016. Charles Rayfield was born in Bremen, Germany, on April 19, 1841, and died August 28, 1922, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 9 days. He came to America at the age of 16 landing at New Orleans, La., on Nov. 25, 1857, and was naturalized October 3, 1866. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Co. B, 7th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, and served throughout the war, engaging in 35 battles and being wounded three times. He was converted at the age of 28 at revival meeting held at the United Brethren church, Holton, Kan. In 1874 he joined the Evangelical church and was a member of that church until he moved to Horton in 1887, transferring by letter to this church. … He was married Sept. 6, 1865, to Eveline Wilson. To this union three children - George, William and Isaac were born. Eveline Wilson Rayfield died Nov. 1, 19170. He was married to Louisa Hildebrandt on Jan. 1, 1874 and to this union four children, Henry Edward, Anna Rebecca, Nellie May and Franklin J. were born. Anna Rayfield Westeen died May 28, 1917, and Nellie May died at the age of eight months. He is survived by his wife and five children - Geo. 12017. Louise Klusmire was born near Wamego, Kansas, June 22, 1861, and died at her home in Woodston, September 3, 1922, at the age of 61 years 2 months and 12 days. She grew to womanhood near Holton, Kansas, where she has many friends and relatives. On March 13, 1894 she was married to Amon L. Meyers of Centralia, Kan. To this union were born three children; one dying in infancy, Marcel and Lionel who were at the bedside when she passed away. In the spring of 1905 they moved to Woodston from Centralia, and have resided there since, part of the time on the farm southeast of town. She has been in poor health for several years and four weeks before her death she fell and fractured her hip … passed away … September 3. 12020. Floride, daughter of Edwin and Martha Wilson, was born in Randolph county, West Virginia, August 23, 1842. Nov. 22, 1864, she was united in marriage with Thos. Chenoweth. Three children were born to them, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. A. H. Voekel, Holton; E. W. Chenoweth, Kansas City, Mo.; and J. F. Chenoweth, Oakland, California. Also one sister remains, Mrs. E. A. Miller, Zanesville, Ohio. In the fall of 1878 she came with the family to Circleville where the greater part of her life was spent. About 35 years ago she united with the Christian church of Circleville and at the time of her decease was a member of the Belmont Ave. Christian church of Kansas City. For the past two years her home has been with her daughter, Mrs. A H. Voekel … was stricken with apoplexy which resulted in her death. She passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 12, at 5:30 o’clock. 12022. Captain John Atwater, whose death occurred at Christ’s hospital in Topeka, September 11, was born in Huron county, Ohio, October 17, 1838. He had reached the age of 83 years, 10 months and 25 days when death removed him from his earthy sufferings. He was married to Miss Patience Peck at Huron, Ohio, December 25, 1866, and to them five children were born. One died in infancy and a son, Leon, died in 1906. Leon Atwater left a daughter, Dorothy, who now resides in Denver. The remaining sons are; Charles, Maurice and John W., who with the widow are left to mourn … Captain Atwater came to Kansas in 1884, and with his family settled on the farm just north of Netawaka. … Captain Atwater was the only surviving member of the Netawaka Post of the G. A. R. He enlisted at the beginning of the civil war in the 7th Ohio Infantry, then re-enlisted for the duration of the war. He was invalided home for wounds, but on his recovery again enlisted.
