Conversational Implicature

• Conversational implicature: Implications derived on the basis of conversational principles and assumptions, relying on more than the linguistic meaning of words in a sentence.
• Conversational implicauture is--- a kind of extra meaning that is not literally contained in the utterance.
• An implicature is a piece of information that is conveyed indirectly by an utterance. It is neither a part nor a necessary consequence of the utterance.

• Example 1:

Student A: Do you like Linguistics?

Student B: Well, let’s just say I don’t jump for joy before class.

• +> A asked B about his feelings about the class, and B said B didn’t celebrate before the class. It shows the uninterested feeling of B about Linguistics subject

The co-operative principle

• Grice proposed that all speakers, regardless of their cultural background, adhere to a basic principle governing conversation which he termed THE CO-OPERATIVE PRINCIPLE. That is, we assume that in a conversation the participants will co-operate with each other when making their contributions.
• Make your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged (Grice, 1989: 26)
