Introduction
The actuality of the course paper
This study investigates Mark Twain’s The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and how this author reflects the main ideas in his novel through using satire, irony, and humor. The novel of Mark Twain deals with the issues prevalent in the nineteenth century, amongst which are slavery, injustice, exploitation and religious hypocrisy. However, Twain used humor to highlight these issues. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain creates a contrast between the innocence of Huckleberry Finn and the mob-like mentality of southerners in the United States to mock the racism of the south, and prove that individual morality is superior to the morality of the majority.
The aim of the course paper
This study aims to achieve the following objectives:
Examining the use of subversive satire, irony and humour in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) by Mark Twain explores the issues surrounding race relations and slavery, during an important period in the American history, and focuses on the ignorance of southern society and southern people in their support of slavery. Mark Twain creates a contrast between the innocence of Huckleberry Finn and the racism of the south, to mock the mob-like mentality of southerners in the United States and prove that individual morality is superior to the morality of the majority. Mark Twain uses satire, irony and humor in his novel.
The practical value of the course paper
The significance of the present study comes from focusing on how Mark Twain used humor in his novel to illustrate his messages. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, slavery, racism and colonialism became one of the major concerns being debated in society. Literary writers, authors and essayist all, in one way or another, dealt with these issues, whether by showing the horrible consequences of slavery and colonialism or by treating the subject indirectly through the use of satire, irony and humor. Amongst these writers is Mark Twain in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He uses the same techniques of subversive satire, irony and humor in his work to deliver his message or to convey their ideas. In this study, the research seeks to study this novel, which had a great impact on society and literature.
The structure of the course paper
The following course paper is composed of a few paragraphs explaining Mark Twain’s life and his works, in particular, his one of the greatest novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. Firstly, the course paper is started with some general information collected as one full paragraph – introduction. Within the introduction, I try to reveal the reasons why this paper matters, which is followed by the paper’s aim, its practical value and what I am writing now – structure. During the other paragraphs, I try to discover Mark Twain as one of the greatest novelist.
