Text 10.Soil pollution facts.

The soil acts as a natural sink for pollutants by accumulating and sometimes concentrating pollutants that enter the soil from various sources. Pollutants accumulate in small amounts in the soil and - depending on the environmental conditions (including soil types) and the degradability of the pollutants released - can reach high levels and pollute the soil. If the soil is contaminated, home-grown vegetables and fruits can also be contaminated. This happens because most of the soil pollutants present in the soil are extracted from the plants along with the water each time they are fed.

Hence, it is always a good idea to test the soil before starting any edible growing. This is especially important if your garden is near an industrial or mining area, or within 1 mile of a major airport, port, landfill, or foundry.
