Theodore Dreiser's first novel was Sister Carrie (1900) story of a young working girl. The publishers did not approve of the book because it did not follow establisher morals- ‘bad’ characters were not punished and vice we rewarded. As a result, Dreiser had to make a lot of revise to the story in order to get it published. The book was given much publicity and few copies were sold.
