Sir Philip Sidney was born in England in 1554. By his mid twenties, Sidney had already worked as Queen Elizabeth's ambassador abroad and had written and published the finest collection of love poems of his age. He composed music and songs. He had the education, the wit and the will to make English itself the subject of some of his poetry. He died when he was thirty-one years old on a battlefield fighting the Spanish in the Netherlands. He became famous for giving his water bottle to another wounded soldier. He said, "Your need is greater than mine".
