Water sports
Water sports refers to activities and sports that take place on or in water. These range from common activities that even young children can try such as swimming to risky extreme sports including deep sea diving, freediving and white water rafting. Many people also try water sports such as scuba diving, which is similiar to deep sea diving but the diver doesn’t go down as far in the ocean.
Other types of water sports take place on the water rather than in it.

Snorkelling is a fun and relatively safe water sport that people can try at the seaside. The participant stays near to the surface so their air pipe is above the water while they swim under. This means they can swim and breathe at the same time. They also have big goggles which cover their eyes so they can see what is happening below them in the water. Is this a water sport you would like to try?

Surfing is an activity in which participants try to ride along the top of waves towards the shoreline on a wooden board called a surfboard. It is very important to have good balance so that you can stay on the board for a long time. You should be a strong swimmer in case you fall off the surfboard, or if not you should have a lifejacket to protect you from drowning.
Like surfing, you need to have great balance and coordination to be good at this sport. It involves trying to stay on a motorised boat as you whizz through the water. Although participants wear a lifejacket it can be a dangerous water sport because of the high speed and the danger of crashing. If you decide to do this sport first you will need to do a course led by a qualified instructor. You will also need:
