A computer monitor
is an output device that displays 
information in graphical or textual form. A monitor 
usually consists of a visual display, some circuits, a 
housing, and a 
power 
supply. 
The 
display 
device in modern 
monitors 
is 
usually a thin-
film 
transistor 
liquid 
crystal 
display 
(TFT-
LCD) with LED 
backlight, 
replacing 
the 
backlight of a cold 
cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). Previous monitors 
used a cathode ray tube (CRT) and some plasma (also 
called gas plasma) displays. Monitors are connected to a 
computer via VGA, Digital Visual Interface (DVI), HDMI,

DisplayPort, USB-C, Low-voltage differential alarm 
(LVDS) or other proprietary connectors and signals. 
Initially, computer monitors were used for data 
processing, and televisions were used for entertainment. 
Since the 1980s, computers (and their monitors) have 
been used for both data processing and entertainment, 
while televisions have implemented some computer 
functions. The overall aspect ratio of televisions and 
computer monitors has changed from 4:3 to 16:10 and 16:9. 
A central processing
- unit (CPU), also called a central 
processing unit, main processor, or simply processor, is an 
electronic circuit that executes instructions containing a 
computer program. The central processor performs the 
basic 
arithmetic, 
logical, control and 
I/O 
operations 
specified 
by 
the 
instructions in the 
program. 
This 
contrasts 
with 
external components 
such as main memory 
and I/O circuits, and 
specialized processors 
such as graphics processing units (GPUs).

The form, design and implementation of processors 
have changed over time, but their fundamental work 
remains almost unchanged. The main components of the 
CPU include an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) that performs 
arithmetic and logical operations, processor registers that 
feed operands to the ALU and store the results of ALU 
operations, and a control unit that organizes sampling 
(from memory), decoding and executing instructions, 
directing consistent operations from the ALU, registers 
and other components.
