Choose ONE question and write AT LEAST 200 WORDS.
a) Has anyone ever spread a rumour about you that has tainted your reputation? Write about the rumour and its effects.
b) Some people find it easy to speak up in public, while others tend to be incoherent when trying to speak in a group. Which are you? Write about at least one experience that shows how easy or difficult speaking up in public is for you.
c) What, in your opinion, is the single biggest blight on society today? Explain your opinion as well as one or two solutions you have contrived for dealing with the problem.
Rumors are powerful and often spread like wildfire. These rumors can often make or break a celebrity, politician, place of business etc. Sometimes a rumor starts out as innocent gossip that, over time, as it spreads from person to person gets tweaked just a little each time and the resulting message is completely different. Other times rumors are viciously construed lies made to hurt someone because of jealousy, anger, disappointment. The start of a rumor, or the success of it, really depends on how the celebrity or place of business are looked upon.
In terms of public opinion a rumor can be started just because a customer at a restaurant didn’t like the attitude of the waiter, thus, starting a rumor to smear the name of the establishment. To relate this to our experiment, laxatives in the food, is really just a rumor that is saying that the students don’t like the food at Wayne Hall. If the food were to improve and Wayne Hall were to become more popular among students this rumor would gradually start to fade into nonexistence. Of course, the rumor itself, is false. According to Snopes.com there are multiple reasons why students are visiting the “john” a little more frequently in their college day, especially residents. Students may not realize but they are eating more food more often than any other time in their life. This is the first time many students are on their own and there is no restriction on what they can eat. These foods contain fat which itself is a natural laxative.
In highschool there were so many rumors about so many different students. It always seemed that these rumors were constantly changing as well. One thing I noticed was that none of these rumors were positive. While that may be obvious there are some positive rumors, although those wouldn’t be called rumors. Most of the rumors were really out of spite. As I said earlier a jealous ex-boyfriend or maybe even two former friends that ended their friendship on the rocks. Another thing is that there are always “stoppers”. These are the students to which the rumor gets to but goes no further. There are a couple of reasons for this. Either the rumor has run its course and there is no one else to tell, or they can’t be bothered to get involved. Either way, a rumor finds its way to everyone around it.
Now back to my point about positive rumors. Most businesses would call it word of mouth, the best kind of advertising. Sally gets her hair done at a certain salon, they do a great job, she tells two of her friends and they each tell two friends, and those friends each tell two friends. There is now a buzz and not one business or storeowner or former friend is getting hurt in the process. This can work outside of the business world too. If I spread a rumor that a football player was faster than a cheetah, that would be false but it would be uplifting as well.
In conclusion there are different variables that affect a rumor. These variables are just as important as the rumor because if they don’t come together right the rumor may die off quickly. It needs the right amount of believability, negative or positive feeling toward the ex-friend that the rumor was started toward, and enough changes along the line to make the rumor that much more gruesome
