COGNITIVE STYLISTICS AT WORK

Gavins and Steen’s (2003) collection contains applications to text, by different
stylisticians, of a variety of models in cognitive stylistics. Most closely reflecting
the interests of this unit are individual papers in the collection by Gavins, who
explores a Donald Barthelme novel using text world theory and by Emmott, who
examines ‘twists in the tale’ in fiction from a cognitive-discourse perspective.

Wales (1992) is a book-length treatment of the style of James Joyce (and on this
topic, see again reading D4 by Derek Attridge).

With reference to the exploration of metaphor in text, each of the chapters in
Kövecses (2002) book on the subject is accompanied by helpful practical activ-
ities, while useful exercises are distributed throughout Goatly’s book on
metaphor (Goatly 1997). Articles on metaphor with a text-based or practical
orientation include Crisp (2003) and Heywood 
et al
(2002).
