Avoiding 
distractions 
Students are always at risk of being distracted from their studies. 
It makes no diference whether you are studying online or face-to-
face; there are plenty of things you can do as a student other than 
study. Indeed, in a face-to-face lecture recently, a student told me 
that she was tired and unable to concentrate. She wanted me to 
explain a theory again, as she felt she hadn’t quite “got it”. I asked 
why she was so tired, and she said that it was because she didn’t 
fnish the work for class until 5:00 am. Naturally, I wondered why 
she had left it so late. It transpired that while she was cooking 
dinner the evening before, some of her housemates suggested a 
trip out. She had told them she was due to complete some work, 
so she could not go. But then she relented and said that she would 
do the work when they got back. Apparently, one of her mates said 
that she was unlikely to do it despite her promises to get on with 
the work immediately after returning. Of course, when she got 
back from the outing, she went straight to bed, ignoring the work. 
Ten she woke up in a mild panic at 4:00 am when she suddenly 
remembered she had not completed the classwork. So, she had to
